Liberia

Diamonds for Sale!

Liberia is unique amongst African nations because of its historical links with the USA. Except for Ethiopia it is the only country in
sub- Saharan Africa without roots to Europe.

It was the first black African republic and was founded and colonised by liberated slaves in 1821. Hence “Liberia”. It has maintained links with the USA ever since and the Liberian flag is quickly recognised by its similarity to the Stars and Stripes.

However, it was torn apart by civil wars, and since peace in 1997 it has been trying to re-establish itself amongst Africa’s elite.

It has amazing tourism potential with almost 40% of the country covered by primate dominated rainforest and jungle, sweeping savannah plains and 350 miles of almost deserted white-sand beaches.

Its game includes huge herds of forest elephant as well as Nile (pygmy) hippos, lions, leopards, buffalo, lowland gorillas, chimps, zebras, forest hog, huge toads and a variety of primates. Like its neighbour, Sierra Leone, it has prolific birdlife and has the smartest parrots in the World!

Its people are also accepted to be amongst the World’s most handsome and beautiful, with tall, elegant women blessed with the “ring neck” and “coca cola” waist, with skin colours ranging from dark black (Kissis tribe) to light chocolate (Grebos tribe).

Its tourism infrastructure is currently very backward, with poor standards of accommodation outside of the capital Monrovia. However, there is mineral wealth as well as diamonds, and gradually facilities are being developed which will be able to attract tourists again.

What To See & Do

  • Accompanied by a guide, trek into the jungle to see the amazing wildlife, which is almost totally shielded from contact with Man. The only game reserve is the Sapo National Park located in the south east and it is about 320km by road from Monrovia. It comprises jungle which is dissected by the Sinoe River and is only accessible on foot and partly by river. It has never been logged, and it is the largest virgin jungle in Western Africa, a phenomenon on par with the Amazon and the jungle of Papua New Guinea

  • Visit the bustling mountain town of Ganta (formerly Gompa City)

  • Swim and surf in the pounding Atlantic at Ellen’s Beach, near Monrovia. Visiting Australians acclaim it to be amongst some of the best surfing in the World!

  • Experience the rich diversity and cultural ceremonies of several different ethnic groups

When To Go

The best time to visit is between November and April.

From May to October it can be very wet.

The best time to see lions is in April before the rains begin and the lions disappear into the long grass.
