Dinner at Riboville in Cape Town central, where your guide will accompany you.
Set in the beautifully restored ABC Bank Building - one of SA’s Top 5 listed heritage buildings - the bastion of big money has been reborn as Riboville Restaurant & Cellar. This landmark building is certainly impressive with its marble clad pillars, high ceilings, and original skylights. A single majestic chandelier is suspended proudly from the ceiling and together with the superbly-crafted windows and doors, is a reminder of the grandeur that many buildings possessed decades ago. Even the bank manager’s office, (which currently serves as the smoking lounge, but will soon be converted into a private dining room), is handsomely appointed with rich wood panelling and its own fireplace. Take a ride in the elevator which dates back to 1941 and marvel at the original brass and wooden fittings which are meticulously maintained and lovingly polished. Then pause to admire the colourful exquisitely
painted Japanese murals which depict a magical story of a sea turtle whose rescuer is eventually rewarded with immortality.
The wealth now lies in the scale and sheer luxury of space. Reminiscent of Grand Central Station, the volume evokes a sense of drama; the mood whispers old New York. This is indeed a unique restaurant with the central banking hall now a fine dining area and a bar set aside for the timeless enjoyment of oysters and champagne; caviar and vodka. Along with several kinds of caviar and three varieties of oysters the bar also offers champagnes by the glass (with 50 champagnes in the cellar!) With 4 kitchens under the same roof, a world class dining experience awaits you with options that match the scale of the 220-seater interior.
There is a full Asian Fusion Kitchen, blending delicate Vietnamese flavours and seductive aromas in an array of meat, chicken, lamb, duck and vegetarian dishes, whilst the Codfather kitchen displays a vast range of fresh seafood. A separate dim sum and sushi counter and a tapas bar continue the taste journey. The Riboville kitchens can also cater for you at home or the office with the Riboville@home catering service. In the newly created wine bar and martini lounge you can enjoy wine by the glass from no less than 109 wine estates, and coupled with this are 40 different kinds of martinis to choose from and the option to join the Martini Society which meets every Tuesday. The wood panelled lounge is luxuriously appointed with leather couches, whilst a stunning black crystal chandelier adds a touch of glamour above the bar. A raised platform features a baby grand piano and together a pianist and saxophonist will entertain you in the evenings. The lounge area leads out into St. Georges street mall, where you can enjoy cafe style dining throughout the day under shady umbrellas, or relax with a sundowner after a hectic day at the office. Whisky connoisseurs have not been forgotten either, with a choice of over 40 premium whiskeys available from the Whisky bar.
Riboville houses its most precious assets in the old cash vault-turned cellar and restaurant - a collection of over 600 different wines representing more than 100 estates. Each of the 20 000 bottles is tagged with a handwritten label stating provenance. Diners can wander down and select their own bottle with prices ranging from R70.00 to R9 950.00 and Riboville has won Best Wine List from Diners Club as well as Wine List of the Year. Two of the original safety deposit boxes now house garagiste and imported wines from five countries. There is also an impressive selection of champagnes (including the Lois Roederer Cristal champagne) some of which are available as magums and jeroboams. In addition to tasting wines in the cellar, patrons can sample a huge selection of fine cheeses and imported chocolates. The vault restaurant can cater for up to 30 people and offers set menus consisting of 3 or 5 courses. The menu changes every two weeks and is an exclusive epicurean experience.
Located on the 1st floor are the opulent bathrooms , a large conference centre and a private dining room which can accommodate 40 seating or 70 standing. Known as the Brown Room this private dining area has its own kitchen (which doubles as a bar) and a small secluded balcony. On this floor you will also find the splendid cigar library offering a fine range of cognacs to enjoy with your cigar and selection of books for your pleasure. Moving up to the 4th floor you will find an in-house art centre with resident artists, as well as an artwork display which changes monthly.
