Sao Tome and Principe is determined to foster quality tourism, and responsible investment in its infrastructure has been encouraged. There are now hotels of international standard, some of which are owned and managed by well-known Portuguese chains, such as Pestana.
There has also been some interesting investment on both islands by the Africa’s Eden group who have already been successfully developing eco-tourism projects in Gabon.
Our recommended accommodation on both islands includes part of the Africa’s Eden project:-
Omali Lodge, Island of Sao Tome
Formerly known as the Marlin Beach Hotel, Omali Lodge has been revamped as an eco-lodge set on the expansive white sand Lagarto Beach, less than 2km from Sao Tome town. It is also convenient for visits to the Obo National Park. It is a boutique- style property which is rich in African, Portuguese and South American colonial culture.
Rooms & Views
30 bungalow-style air-conditioned rooms with private bath, TV and internet connection, with the accommodation set in tropical gardens around the pool.
Facilities
The facilities include a restaurant, bar, swimming pool and small spa. Arrangements can be made to visit Obo National Park and the town is within easy access
Bom Bom Island Resort, Island of Principe
This bungalow-style hotel on the northern shore of Principe is probably the most exquisite hotel in the islands. The accommodation and main buildings are in tropical gardens on the shoreline and other services are provided on the tiny islet which is reached by a 230 metres wooden-decked walkway. There are two private beaches as part of the resort.
Rooms & Views
The 21 bungalows comprise 9 with front beach views, 5 with ocean view and 7 with garden view. All are air-conditioned with private shower and a furnished patio and offer TV with satellite connection, safe, fan and a mini fridge.
Facilities
The pool is in the gardens close to the accommodation. There is a pool bar, a boutique, facilities for foreign exchange and internet and email services.
There is a restaurant and bar on the islet which is famous for romantic dinners. Also on the islet are the dive centre and a jetty. Arrangements can be made for fishing, whale watching, hiking and the turtle programme.
Other recommended hotels on Sao Tome include the 4 stars Hotel Miramar which offers 59 air-conditioned room and suites, international restaurant and a large pool and is close to the town’s amenities.
The Ilheu das Rolas Island Resort straddles the Equator. It is managed by the Pestana group and offers international facilities. It is located on a beach 60 km south from the capital and 75 km from the airport.
