"UNDISCOVERED PARADISE" - A 7 nights itinerary featuring highlights of both these little known islands
Friday Day 1
On arrival in Sao Tome your are met by our staff and helped with arrival procedures and check in arrangements for your onward scheduled 30 minutes flight to the Island of Principe. You are met and transferred to the Bom Bom Island Resort located on the northern shore by Banana Beach where you arrive in time for lunch. Bom Bom comprises 21 recently upgraded air-conditioned bungalows with private shower and a furnished patio and either a beach, ocean or garden view. There is a pool in the gardens and a restaurant and bar on an islet reached by a 230 metres wooden-decked walkway. There are two secluded beaches as part of the resort. All meals are included during your stay
Saturday Day 2
Although Bom Bom is a wonderful resort just for chilling out, there is also plenty to do and discover. A tour of San Antonio, the main town, will give you an immediate insight into the colonial Portuguese heritage. Enjoy the warm hospitality of the locals and join them for a beer in one of the quaint bars. Visit the Saturday fish and produce market and pop into the old shops to be amazed at the myriad offerings, especially some of the remedies the chemist may prescribe. Alternatively you can walk round Bom Bom island or go diving or snorkelling and the resort can offer packages and equipment. Hump back whales visit these waters between mid July and mid September.
Sunday Day 3
After breakfast you are transferred to the airport for your 30 minutes scheduled flight to the island of Sao Tome. You will be met at the airport for your 5 minutes transfer to the Omali Lodge hotel which stands on a white sand beach and is within 1.5km of the picturesque main town of Sao Tome. It has 30 bungalow style air-conditioned junior suites set around the pool and all with a private bath. Arrangements at Omali Lodge are for room and continental breakfast.
Monday Day 4 to Thursday Day 7

If you are flying with TAP Airlines of Portugal you will have an early morning transfer to the airport for your flight back to Europe or the Americas.

- Visit to the volcanic crater deep in the forest of the Obo National Park
- Visit the old town centre of Sao Tome and pick up on the vibes of the colonial era. There is some splendid architecture, lively market and streets and an impressive museum where the guide will tell you about life on the plantations and Sao Tome’s torrid pre-independence history.
- Visit the Bom Sucesso Botanical Gardens where there are 700 specimens of native flora including more than 100 orchid varieties, and fauna which includes endemic bird species
- Day trip by car to the East Coast. The first stop is at a working cocoa plantation with its fine example of colonial wharehouse buildings. Continue along the coast through fishing villages and enjoying some of the most spectacular scenery in the island. By lunchtime you end up at the plantation of Roca Sao Joao where you can enjoy some of the culinary specialities of the famous chef and artist, Joao Carlos Silva, as well as a tour of the plantation and colourful guesthouse, an eclectic blend of modern art , colonial heritage and rural Santomean craftwork. On your way back to the Omali Lodge a stop is made for swimming from one of the many secluded, palm-fringed beaches of the east coast.
- Hiking in the Obo National Park, which has recently been created to protect the unique eco system of the island. The main point of entry is through an old cocoa plantation which is surrounded by mountains and bears witness to the rush of water from the many waterfalls, and is now a small eco-hostel. An eco-guide will escort you through the plantation and into the rain forest for a short hike and a swim in the waterfall Cascada Formosa, after which you return to the plantation for an excellent cup of the speciality coffee.
- Sea Turtle Night Patrol. Sea Turtles have been coming to Sao Tome for millions of years. Between October and April five species can be seen; the green turtle, the leatherback, the olive riddley, the hawksbill and the caouanne. Arrangements can be made for you to accompany our eco-guides on their nightly patrols of the beach as protect the turtles as they crawl ashore to nest.
- Bird-watching expeditions. With 143 species, including the rare endemic Sao Tome short tail, Sao Tome giant sunbird and the Sao Tome fiscal shrike, the island is a new mecca for ornithologists.

- Day trip by car to the Wild South of Sao Tome. This full day trip takes you into the heart of the Caue district at the extreme south of the island, where the road ends and the adventure begins. After a stop for coffee at renowned Roca Sao Joao plantation, you head for Malanza, a small village near to Sao Tome’s largest mangrove area which is part of the Obo National Park. Here fishermen will take you in traditional canoes to discover the peculiar bio diversity on the mangroves. Lunch is then taken at the unique community- managed Jale Ecolodge and from there you continue to the plantation of Roca Porto Alegre and its breathtaking views of the Iogo-Iogo Bay. On the way back to Omali Lodge you stop at one of Caue’s most secret beaches for a swim.
- Day Trip by car for a Countryside Tour which is accompanied by an agronomist. It includes visits to various smallholdings including plantations of cocoa, coffee, vanilla, pepper and a tropical garden specialising in the export of ornamental flowers, including those regularly exhibited at London’s Chelsea Flower Show.
- Hiking along the Tunnels of the Rio Contador. This is an adventure into the National Park to discover Sao Tome’s unusual water levada adduction system, an impressive inheritance of Portuguese colonial engineering which is also to be found on Madeira and parts of the Cape Verde Islands. There are kilometres of tunnels dug into slopes and cliffs to form canals to bring water from the Contador River. The levadas are the tow paths alongside the canals which nowadays provide some challenging hikes for visitors to the Park and which take you through abandoned plantations and deep forests to the great Contador Waterfall.
