"The Mountains of the Lions” ......magnificent beaches, lush landscapes, jungle and abundant wildlife, prolific birdlife......and some of the most precious gems in the World!
When translated, Sierra Leone means “The Mountains of the Lions”. It was one of the first African countries to have links with Europe when the Portuguese settled in 1462 and it became an important centre for the slave trade. On 11th March 1792 Freetown was founded and became just that; a free homeland for previously enslaved Americans. From 1808 the country was a British colony until 1961 and it is now a stable independent democratic republic and a member of the British Commonwealth.
Rich in mineral resources, especially diamonds and gold, it has tropical climate with a diverse environment ranging from savannah to rainforests. The population is just over six million.
Freetown, the capital, has a happy go lucky and vibrant atmosphere and the Freetown Peninsula has some of Africa’s most magical beaches. Freetown is the World’s third largest natural harbour—the largest in Africa.
The people are very friendly and tourists are always made to feel welcome. Although tribal, there are no inter-tribe or religious frictions, with marriage between tribes and religions commonplace. There are sixteen recognised ethnic groups, each with its own language, custom and dress.
There are four distinct geographic regions:
The east is mountainous, with Mount Bintumani at 1,948m (6,391 feet) the highest point in the country.
The centre is a region of lowland plains, containing bush, forests and farmland.
The south is mainly jungle and rainforest
In the west there is a 400km Atlantic coastline, giving it bountiful marine resources and attractive tourism potential
